Luxury Cruiseliner to Accommodate Same-Sex Marriages

By November 14, 2017 No Comments

Making waves in history thanks to the voting in the country of registry for the line’s service fleet.

American company Celebrity Cruises, the minds behind some of the best Mediterranean cruise routes have a long history of endorsing the LGBTQI+ community and have already played host to a number of same-sex weddings in and around the Caribbean where it was already legal.

Due to recent ruling in Malta, same-sex couples can now register official marriages. The luxury shipline has since extended its reach to international waters. The motion followed the transformative vote that took Malta by storm in July, where all but one MP voted in favour of the movement with a landslide of 66 up.

The announcement was made on October 11th, celebrated as ‘National Coming Out Day’ globally ahead of a press release. In following, the company announced itself as a sponsor to the Australian LGBT Awards.

What does this mean for Malta?

Because of the new legislation, captains are now able to officiate weddings onboard for happy couples. The line also offers numerous wedding packages, and can also organise destination weddings in and around the territories in which they operate.

The Nautical Nuptials at Sea package includes a Captain-led ceremony. Orchestrated with live music, photography, cake and Champagne. There’s even an option for a romantic turndown post-ceremony.

As of yet, no other cruise line has performed a legal same-sex wedding at sea in international waters. While British cruise line P&O have already made headlines for being the first to offer the service, their ceremonies aren’t due to start until 2018.
