Next to the wedding cake and the happy ever after, the proposal is easily the most important part of the getting hitched ritual. Of course, while everyone is unique and each person will want to celebrate their love in a different way, when it comes to celebrities, bigger is always better. Although some of the couples below are no longer together, it doesn’t make their proposals less lavish. Here’s how some of your favourite stars started their happy ever afters in unequivocally over-the-top style:
1. Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon
Known as the queen of excess, there was no way that Miss Carey was just going to settle for a €1000 ring and a quick proposal, in fact, Nick Cannon went the extra mile and not only proposed once to her, but twice. The first proposal took place on the rooftop of her Manhattan apartment when Mr Cannon gave his now ex beloved a 17 carat diamond ring which was hidden in a candy pop ring, however, clearly feeling that this wasn’t enough, he kidnapped her a few days later and took her on a helicopter ride where he re-proposed to her.
2. Heidi Klum and Seal
Known for what is considered to be one of the most romantic songs of all time, the ‘Kiss From A Rose’ singer definitely lived up to his passionate persona when he proposed to his model girlfriend, Heidi Klum in model fashion. Seal did not only rent out a helicopter to take his girlfriend up to the Rocky Mountains but once they got there, Heidi was greeted with a private igloo complete with candles, roses, champagne and a wonderful meal. Seal proposed in the igloo and a no doubt glowing Klum said yes.
3. Kim Kardashian and Kanye West
No celebrity list of just about anything would be complete without a Kardashian in it and the queen of them all is undoubtedly Kim. Confessing that he had been chasing her for many years, Kanye wasn’t going to let Kim get away from him again and decided to put a ring on it on 21st October 2013 which not so uncoincidentally was her thirty-third birthday. Kanye rented out the entire stadium in San Francisco and flew out all her friends and family to join in the celebrations after he popped the question on bended knee and via the stadium’s Jumbotron display. The evening reached its climax with a ninety-piece orchestra playing her favourite songs and fireworks.
4. Ludacris and Eudoxie Mbouguiengue
There was nothing funny about the way rapper Ludacris proposed to his girlfriend Eudoxie, The rapper and his girlfriend were on their way to Costa Rica for their Christmas vacation when Ludacris told his already excited girlfriend to look out of the window as they were arriving at their destination. Sure enough, when she peered out she realized that the rapper had arranged for “Will you marry me?” to be written in grass on the ground below.
5. Christina Aguilera and Jordan Bratman
Aguilera’s Valentine’s Day was made extra sweet when her then boyfriend Jordan Bratman took her away to romantic seaside town Carmel-by-the-Sea and asked her to marry him. Christina walked into a room full of rose petals and gift boxes and soon discovered that the boxes were full of poems which were clues to a scavenger hunt. The prize for getting the answers right?
