Just how does one tell the world that they’re getting married? Do you keep it hush-hush until the invites are sent, only to let slip to few family and friends? Or do you grace everyone’s Instagram feeds with an unnecessary amount of filtered snaps of your new silver band?
Admittedly, engagement is no longer the highly formal deal it used to be. At one time, such an agreement was considered a legally binding contract and calling things off before the big day without lawful justification would result in lengthy court cases for broken couples.
Family Comes First!
We all know that Malta is a sucker for tradition. Your parents deserve to be the first to know. Be courteous. If anything, though not as necessary nowadays, you should seek the permission of our parents (here’s looking at you, guys 😉) before the question is popped. As forward-fashioned as we all are, we know deep down that your parents would appreciate any kind of gesture towards asking for approval.
So, Where to Start?
Sticking in line with tradition, the bride’s parents should be the first to know. This should then swiftly follow with the groom’s parents (but who are we to stick to tradition?). In times gone by, newly engaged couples would announce the news through local newspapers (read: hell yes, TRADITION!) but in the dawning age of social media, sadly, Facebook has taken over.Â
Just make sure that those closest to you get to know beforehand – and NOT via Snapchat!
