Wedding decor can be a pain in the neck and also a strain on any budget, with there always being the fear of having too much or too little. Nowadays, more and more couples are trying to tighten the purse strings all the while still hosting a wedding that sticks in the minds of their guests for all time to come. We’ve selected our favourite style hacks for any wedding planner looking to add a unique flair to their decor this wedding season!
1. Hang an empty frame with ribbon to a tree or from a wall unit to create a cheap alternative to a photobooth for your guests.
Not only does this look amazing, but it lets you get creative. You can choose any style of frame you like, and any colour. You don’t even have to hang them, place them around the venue in areas perfect for guests to snap that perfect candid.
Bonus: frames can be used to display many things as well, for example smaller frames can be painted on or filled with name cards for table plans or guest instructions (like asking your guests to hashtag your wedding).
2. Tulle backdrops can hide a multitude of wedding day sins.
For an indoor wedding, the worst thing isn’t a rainy day, but it can still change the mood if guests are able to see outside. For the lucky ones, rain is never a problem on our wedding day whether we’re indoor or out, but anything about your venue that you don’t like can be covered by tulle knots strung around, or they can even be used to section areas of your reception. Line the bar with them, or hang a few in a circle to create a romantic selfie booth for your guests to enjoy.
3. Run, don’t line.
Tulle can come in handy again here, but so can any thin material of your choice. Instead of following the norm and lining every table with linen that almost reaches the floor, run a line of tulle or fabric across your lengthy tables and accentuate the rustic feel to your decor. Make it feel homely.
Another tip: LED string lights can make any use of tull look even better, drape the ends of your tables with string lights to draw in the attention of your guests to the finer details of your decor. (Just be sure to get lights that don’t heat up, we wouldn’t want any early displays of fireworks…)
4. Glass bottles can be recycled!
While not everyone likes the idea of DIY, recycling is a global effort these days. We all like to do our bit, and you can even make some of your guests feel more involved with the planning of the wedding if you get them roped into this too.
Save any glass bottles you like the look of, and ask your friends and family to do the same. These can make excellent vases or standalone centerpieces, they look great filled with fairy lights and if recycled for the use of the wedding are cost-effective.
5. Height always matters.
Adding height to anything can add further dimension to your decor, try using raised candle holders to draw breadth over your tables and displays, and varying the heights of each candle holder will keep the guests focused on where they’re looking as they take in all the beauty of your flowers and other decor.
You can also use height when it comes to the display of the cake, why not be different and have a 2-3 layer cake for show, like the one below and then serve the guests from a larger sheet cake later on in the evening. This keeps the beauty of your cake for longer, and can cut the cost of having a cake big enough and beautiful enough to serve everyone. It’s a win-win!
6. Winter wedding? Protect your guests from the chill and provide throws and blankets.
Getting married outdoors? It’s common knowledge: when the sun goes down, the temperature drops. If you’re not getting married during Summer, overlooking something as simple as temperature control can make or break your wedding.
Provide your guests with throws or blankets to be returned (or kept, if you’re feeling generous) to ensure all of your guests remain comfortable for the duration of the day.
Even if you are getting married in the Summer, try and get some thinner material throws and stop those pesky mosquitoes from becoming the center of attention, what with all the lights around they’ll be in their element at a wedding. (You can also use citronella infused candles if this is something you are worried about)
7. Lace, lace and more lace!
Nothing says love more than lace. These days you can find just about anything with a lace pattern etched into it. Check out the SKURAR range from Ikea for an idea of what we mean, specifically the plant holders. These can be hung from chair corners, strung together to make hanging decor or coloured to be used with centerpieces.
Lace patterns go well at any wedding, even if kept plain with a white theme. With shadows cast from candlelight, you too can have a wedding worthy of royalty.
8. Wait for it… Italian Soda Bar Carts!
Bar carts can be nifty at any wedding, and allow for the diversion of congestion at the open bar. By placing small carts, decorated with personal taste, and stocking them with the basics (prosecco, gin, soda, campari and vermouth) your guests can get stuck into making their own drinks. And, it’s a conversation piece.
We’re so used to attending a wedding and being handed a welcome drink. Which is well deserved after the hassle guests go through to find parking. But a bar cart allows you to combine any feature we’ve previously mentioned. You can tailor the cart to your liking, even if it ends up being a water bottle station. The cart can be taken home and used to decorate your newlywed pad. A first touch for the happy couple!
