Welcome back to our five-part series in which we’re tackling global wedding traditions. This week, we’ll be taking a look at 5 more cultures that celebrate their weddings a little differently to our western selves.
K is for Korea
Grooms in South Korea get their feet whipped by family and friends.
We’ll leave you to settle on that one…
L is for Lithuania
When wedding celebrations have died down in Lithuania, the newlyweds will partake in a ritual called ‘atgriztai’. Literally translated, it means ‘coming back’. The history of this ritual will make your heart melt.
M is for Macedonia
Macedonian grooms can be very shaky on the morning of their wedding. Pre-wedding jitters can get to anyone. Would you risk butchering your face on the biggest day of your life? Well, neither would Macedonians grooms who have their groomsmen shave their face for them.
N is for Nigeria
Old traditions state that Nigerian men must marry in chronological order. So, good luck to any young’uns out there with old brothers living the bachelor life.
Good luck to any Nigerians getting married in general – guest lists might be a thing but they’re not always something that the people like to stick to, so invites tend to remain open to entire communities.
O is for Oman
Three days after an Omani wedding wedding, the groom will pile his friends and family onto a bus and drive around the area celebrating the new union.
The penultimate stop of their buscapade is made at the home of the bride, where the couple are then taken to their new home to start their lives together.
